New Lightning!

Joey here.

Jeffrey’s stolen Lightning Phantom II never turned up.  Generous Nancy bought him a replacement, pictured below.

This Lightning Phantom was built from an earlier model frame left over at the Lightning facility in Lompoc, California.  Lightning shipped the frame to recumbent dealer The Bicycleman in Alfred Station, NY.  There, Peter Stull built Jeffrey a custom 27-speed Phantom.  He installed straight handlebars, a 3-speed internal hub to replace the standard 3-speed front deraileur, and a weatherproof front drum brake in place of the standard V brake.  Other add-ons include Reelights front and rear, fenders, a rear rack onto which Jeffrey bolted a weatherproof cargo box, a mirror, a brass bell, battery-powered LED lights front and rear, a speedometer/odometer, and bottle cages.  Jeffrey has been riding throughout New York City, over bridges, around potholes, on bike lanes and busy commercial streets, in quiet residential neighborhoods and in the most congested areas of Manhattan.  And now he carries a 10-lb lock and chain.

Jeffrey’s rides of 25-40 miles, at least twice a week, to visit incapacitated persons around NYC as a representative of the Vera Institute of Justice Guardianship Project, are keeping him fit for our next adventure, which will begin on May 22.

In a few days, we’ll announce the route and destination of our fourth Ride for Human Rights. Come back again soon!
