The World is a Narrow Bridge

The whole entire world is a very narrow bridge, but the essential thing is not to make yourself afraid.

Rabbi Nachman of Breslov (1772-1810)

Today we crossed the bridge to Ellis Island.

Jeffrey and Nancy on the ferry to New Jersey.
Pedaling through Jersey City.
Our bike route from the ferry.
National Park Police checkpoint.
L to R: Jeffrey, Joey, Jerry Willis (Public Affairs Officer for the Statue of Liberty / Ellis Island National Monument).
The bridge, heretofore (for us) a Forbidden Zone.

Mid-bridge we reached what we calculated to be the 16,000 mile (25,750 km) mark.

For the entire journey, from April 2011 until today, we did not let ourselves be afraid.

L to R: Joey, Jeffrey
On the ferry back to Manhattan. Nancy: “What an amazing welcome Jeffrey and Joey got from the National Park Service. It truly was a day to remember.”

We’ll share details in the next few days.

  2. Congratulations, Jeffrey and Nancy! You were one of the few to cross that bridge, and hopefully, not the last, in pursuit of making this world a better place. It has been a privilege to follow your journey. Thank you for all you do!

  4. Thanks Jeffrey — I got in Rabbi Nachman originally from reading Wiesel’s “Souls on Fire; Portraits and Legends of Hasidic Masters” (to my thinking, arguably his best book — I read maybe fifteen, starting, obviously, with “Night,” and corresponded with him just a bit), so we must talk of that sort of thing, as well as your work, next we meet. I should mention that I sent this on to several friends, conceivably to spur further conversations or associations. — Happy triking! — Andrew
